Ryder Transportation Services Inc. has submitted an application to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection to clean up an active vehicle maintenance and fueling facility known as Ryder Truck Rental LC-0492. The site is comprised of approximately 3.6 acres and is located at 2815 Fairlawn Ave., Dunbar, in Kanawha County.
The site consists of one lot and is currently an active vehicle rental, maintenance and fueling facility. Several underground storage tanks have previously been removed from the site and environmental investigations and remedial actions have been initiated.
The applicant is working with the DEP’s Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) to address environmental conditions at the site. The primary chemicals of potential concern are total petroleum hydrocarbons (both diesel-range and gasoline-range organics), volatile organic compounds and semi-volatile organic compounds. These chemicals are commonly associated with vehicle maintenance/repair and petroleum fuel storage operations. Additional chemicals of potential concern may be identified through proposed additional site assessment activities.
OER and the applicant have negotiated a voluntary remediation agreement (No. 03822) which includes provisions for identifying human health and ecological risks associated with current and potential future uses of the site, in order to establish appropriate cleanup standards. The agreement also includes provisions for additional clean up proposals if necessary to meet those standards. A final report will be submitted to the OER for review to confirm that the work meets all applicable remediation standards.
